O'BRIANT, C. R., and M. K. OHLBAUM. Visual acuity decrements associated with whole body ±Oz vibration stress. Aerospace Med. 41(1): 79-82. 1970. The fact that vibration has an adverse effect on visual acuity is well established but inadequately quantified. The operational acceleration environments of lo*v altitude terrain avoidance flight, the increasing use of helicopters, and the potential vibration problems associated with space flight launch and reentry all require a better understanding of visual performance under this stress. This study demonstrates that near, intermediate, and distant vision are differentially degraded under vibration stress. A method is presented to describe visual efficiency in terms of a Performance Index that should be useful to aeromedical scientists and clinicians, as well as design engineers.

Human tolerance to Gz acceleration loads generated in high-performance helicopters.
BACKGROUND As the Gz capabilities of tactical helicopters increase, the risk to unprotected helicopter aircrew resulting from the physiologic response to transitions from -1 Gz (push) to +4.5 Gz (pull) loads needs to be addressed. METHODS There were 9 volunteers who participated in a study conducted at the Veridian Operations Centrifuge Facility in Warminster, PA. A 1-h mission scenario consi...
متن کاملThe effect of vibration on performance with electro-optical aids to night vision. SMRL Report No. 589.
Visual acuity at a level of illumination comparable to overcast starlight was measured at various frequencies and amplitudes of vibration chosen to be representative of conditions aboard various ships. Measures were made with electro-optical scopes of four-power and one-power, standard Navy 7x50 binoculars, four-power field glasses, and the naked eye. Decrements in acuity under vibration were l...

PURPOSE To describe the relationship of visual acuity impairment and eye disease on vision-related quality of life, as measured by the 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ-25), in a cross-sectional, population-based study of older Hispanic persons living in Arizona. METHODS A random sample of block groups with Hispanic residents in Nogales and Tucson, Arizona,...

PURPOSE To evaluate visual function after emergent acceleration stress. METHODS Sixteen subjects were enrolled in this study. Human ejection seat trainer was used to induce six times gravitational force in the head-to-toe (z-axis) direction (+6 Gz). Visual performance was evaluated using the visual chart and contrast sensitivity (CS) at indicated times. Ocular reactions were assessed with bio...

In the study of crewmember performance in land-driven vehicles, it is necessary to consider the effects of vibration on the human body. The Advanced Vehicle Architecture for a Net enabled Combat Environment Technology Demonstrator Project (ADVANCE TDP) aims to demonstrate improved crew performance using an integrated multi-layered vectronics network, supported by an active suspension system tha...
